Why U.S. Urban Forest Carbon Credits?

High Quality: preservation (avoided conversion) credits in this portfolio are endorsed by ICROA, one of which received an "A" rating from BeZero Carbon. This rating was in the top 5% of the 400 projects BeZero has rated and is also one of only two avoided conversion deforestation projects rated "A" or above out of 50 projects on five continents.

Public Interest: trees are preserved on public land or land opened to the public, with projects implemented by non-profit organizations and local governments.

Durable: urban trees are preserved for long-term survival and for delivery of benefits to humans, making these among the most durable of forest carbon projects and credits – land tenure is secure, and there are no harvest pressures.

Ecosystem and Social Co-Benefits: ecosystem co-benefits (air quality, heating, cooling and stormwater interception) are quantified with detailed reporting of social impacts mapped to UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Human Stories: many rural forest carbon credits are fungible to buyers and can feel like merely an accounting transaction. Credits from projects in and near cities affect human lives and provide stories that connect buyers and community members to these new forests. The projects are in media markets home to over 20 million people.

Registry: credits are issued by City Forest Credits, a nonprofit carbon registry, whose preservation protocols have been endorsed by ICROA.
